5 Steps to Simple Pain Relief

October 17, 2008 – 10:11 am
I recently learned of a quick technique for pain relief which intrigued me. This is something that can be used for physical as well as emotional pain - and it may be interesting to note the connection between the two. Have you ever noticed how much more sensitive you can become to physical pain when you are feeling emotionally fragile or distressed? Or what about distracting yourself from pain by watching a movie only to find at the end of the movie the pain is there again? Where did the pain go during the movie, then? Maybe it was being usurped by a more pleasurable stimulus (the movie) or your attention was simply focussed elsewhere. It seems like a clever trick the brain can perform, which we could utilise.  It is important to note that physical pain is a warning sign to the body. It is vital then that appropriate medical advice is ...

Are you more intelligent than you think?

September 29, 2008 – 11:51 pm
If you are ever looking for some inspiration to show you how intelligent you really are, read 'The Brain that Changes Itself" by Norman Doidge MD. It's one of the most accessible and exciting books written about the brain to date. It turns out that much of what we have believed to be true about our amazing brains has been largely erroneous. This is terribly GOOD news because as it turns out, the truth is that the brain can grow itself - it's flexible and can change according to how we think. In "The Brain that Changes Itself" we meet Barbara who used the part of her brain that was functioning to rehabilitate the parts that were not (due to retardation from birth). Amongst the case studies presented we also learn that if one part of the brain is not functioning properly - as in the case of stroke or blindness - that ...

Do you think that sleep could impact your memory?

July 17, 2008 – 10:03 am
Anyone who has experienced sleep deprivation through shift work, overwork or small children will know that they notice a marked difference in concentration and tolerance for normal daily challenges the following day, but could sleep also positively help to improve your memory? Recent research has indicated that sleep helps to consolidate the learning and memory of new skills through strengthening the connections between nerve cells. The BBC has the full story here.

Tiredness more common than the common cold, but easier to cure?

June 24, 2008 – 11:56 am
The common cold seems such a simple illness and yet we’re still looking for a cure. With an expected infection rate of a little over one a year, and for families of small children, or their carers, probably more like three a year, they diminish energy and productivity levels and can affect mood and ability to cope with everyday demands. These days, however, we’re experiencing something else that has many of the same characteristic negative effects on our day to day lives, but which is much more prevalent. Tiredness. Tiredness due to lack of adequate rest has not only been found to affect mood, concentration, language skills, memory and creativity, it can also lead to all sorts of health problems such as increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, decreased libido and obesity. According to Carl Hunt, director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research in Bethesda, ...

Getting a good night’s sleep

June 19, 2008 – 11:32 am
Part of how well you sleep depends on how you prepare for sleep. Anyone with kids will know the importance of the bedtime routine. We never grow out of needing a good wind down before we go to bed. There are some tried and true rituals that you probably use, cleaning teeth and putting on p.j.'s being the most popular, reading in bed is also a great way to let your body and mind know that you're getting closer to zzzzzzzzzzzz...some good friends of mine take it a step further and read to eachother in bed, taking turns each night. At the moment they're reading the Philip Pullman's, 'Dark Materials Trilogy'. What is your favourite way to wind down before you go to bed? From mainstream to maverick, post a comment and share the love! Read more about how to get a good night's sleep in pocketnap's "Sleep Secrets" e-book v ...
